Greymoor Academy Recap Part 8: What They Saw

The three princes finally see Samhain through Maisie's eyes, Quinlan finds a witness, Tessa goes after Juliette, and a demon shows his true form. Chapters 274–282.

This Greymoor Academy recap part 8 covers chapters 274–282, the newest chapters we have read. About half of this stretch is for adult readers only, and some of it is violent; we summarise those scenes in one line and never describe them.

Part 7 ended with Maisie burned out by the rift and Soren offering her what she needed to survive. These nine chapters are short on new plot, but one of them changes the whole story.

What they saw

The first two chapters belong to the three princes helping Maisie through the cost of the rift. We won't describe them. What matters is what happens at the end. With her mental walls gone, Maisie's Lycan, which wants all four mates back and the bond whole again, pulls Soren, Jericho and Quinlan straight into her head.

They don't see her desire. They see the cliff. The ash, the mountain, Tessa walking ahead like it's an evening stroll, the knife at their marks on her neck, and Lyon Park holding on while Tessa attacks him, until the fall. For nine months they believed she left them. Now they have lived through what really happened, through her eyes.

Maisie wakes screaming for it to stop. Soren's cheeks are wet. Glass shatters somewhere, and Quinlan is gone. Jericho holds her and tells her to breathe, that it's over.

Our read: this is the reveal readers have waited for since chapter 214, and the book delivers it in the most painful way possible. No confession, no evidence board: they simply feel it.

Quinlan goes hunting

Quinlan's point of view shows a side of him the book has only hinted at: he calls violence a language he speaks fluently. He goes straight to House Graham, where Tessa has been keeping the rogue who held Maisie at the cliff as one of her guards.

Soren gave him one instruction: keep the man alive, because he can help clear Maisie's name. So Quinlan doesn't end him. He uses the man's family to frighten him into a deal: leave the Grahams quietly, go into hiding, and testify at the first trial hearing in two days. Then Quinlan makes him pay for what he did to Maisie, in a way we won't describe.

Tessa's message

Tessa isn't in her bed. A maid is, one chosen because she has Maisie's height, build and blue eyes, without the scars. Tessa calls Quinlan on the maid's phone, laughing, and calls the girl a gift.

Then she tells him what she really thinks. Without Mercer to complete the bond, Quinlan's new mark on Maisie means nothing; once Maisie is executed, things will "go back to normal", and the four will be hers. And the Queen, she adds, wants to send them a message through someone much softer and completely unguarded.

Juliette.

The demon

Juliette has been living at the Academy to escape her brother's control. Every night she dreams of the same green-eyed man with a tail, who calls her "my sweet Julie". Tonight she wakes up to an open window, a muddy trail across the floor, and her cat Philip hissing at the dark.

A mercenary paid by Tessa attacks her. She fights back with a table leg and a vase, but he is far stronger. Then a shadow grows out of the corner where the cat was standing: a ten-foot, horned black beast with glowing green eyes. The mercenary doesn't survive.

The beast heals Juliette's wounds, and the scene turns into something neither of them expected, which we leave to the book. Then it changes shape, into the man from her dreams. His kind, he says, are called jesters and tricksters, demons or angels depending on why he visits. He has spent a thousand years in a cage of flesh and bone, he collects debts, and now she owes him.

Quinlan bursts in and punches straight through the demon's chest. There is no heart. The wound closes, the demon teases him, kisses Juliette goodbye and vanishes. A moment later, Philip the cat crawls out from under the bed with very familiar green eyes. Quinlan stares at the cat for a long time, then packs his sister's things: she is moving to the mansion.

What we noticed

  • The cat has been Phillip Gruer since chapter 239, when he turned into a black cat to hide from Juliette. Chapter 282 is the first time anyone sees what he really is.
  • Tessa's line about Mercer matters: the bond can't be whole without him, and Mercer is still in his mother's custody.
  • The trial is two days away, and for the first time Maisie's side has a witness.

Questions readers ask

Do the princes finally learn what happened on Samhain?

Yes. In chapter 275 Maisie's Lycan pulls Soren, Jericho and Quinlan into her memories of the cliff, and they live through it with her.

Who is the demon who saves Juliette?

A horned, green-eyed creature who turns into the man from her dreams and calls his kind "jesters" and "tricksters". Everything points to Phillip Gruer, who has been living with her as a cat.

What happens at the trial?

Not yet. The first hearing is two days away at chapter 282, and Quinlan has forced Tessa's rogue to testify.
