Our Luna Rising review covers the first four chapters of Luna Rising by Lena Knox, book one of The Elemental Wolves. It is trending on repost sites under other names; please read it on the official platform.
Lost-princess stories live or die on the opening, and Luna Rising goes straight for the heart.
The prologue
Chapter 1 belongs to Alpha King Cian. His mate, Queen Gwen, gives birth to twins, a boy named Gideon and a girl named Seren, each wrapped in a blanket embroidered with their names. The king and queen step out of the room for a few minutes. When they come back, the nurse has been attacked, Gideon is crying in his bassinet, and Seren is gone.
The guards search for days and find nothing. The chapter ends with the sky flashing over the castle and a line we won't spoil.
Eighteen years later
From chapter 2 we follow Seren, a servant in the Blood Moon Pack, where Alpha James treats her as the pack's punching bag and his daughter Amelia's friends call her "mutt". Everyone believes she has no wolf.
They are wrong. Her wolf, Kara, arrived when she was ten, years earlier than usual, and has hidden their scent ever since, quietly sharing her strength and healing. Seren is three days from her eighteenth birthday and her first shift, and she has one plan: get through it and escape.
Before then, Blood Moon is hosting the season's mating ball. Amelia is plotting to trap Alpha Duncan of Crescent Moon into choosing her. And when Seren hears Duncan's name, she feels something she can't explain: a pull, and a flash of anger at Amelia's plan.
What works
- The dramatic irony. Chapter 4 switches to Duncan, and we learn his best friend is Gideon, the Alpha Prince. Seren's twin is walking into the house where she scrubs floors, and nobody knows.
- Kara. A hidden wolf who talks back is a great companion, and their conversations give the bleak setting some warmth.
- Small allies. Kayla, the head omega's daughter, records a girl plotting to frame Seren for theft. Friendship arrives early.
What to know before you start
Seren's treatment in Blood Moon is harsh, and the prologue includes a violent moment, kept brief. The pace is gentler than the other books on this list; this is a world-building series opener.
Who it's for
Fans of lost-princess fantasy, fated mates, royal werewolf courts and slow-reveal family secrets.
Our first impression: the most cinematic opening on this list. We can't wait for the moment Gideon looks at her properly.
