Defying the Lycan King Recap Part 2: Snow Crest

The forced honeymoon, the handbag diner, the contract trap, Kira's recovered memories and the night the Umbras came. Chapters 51–90 of Defying the Lycan King.

Defying the Lycan King recap part 2 covers chapters 51–90. Spoilers up to chapter 90. The novel is for adult readers; this recap is non-graphic.

Her own plan (chapters 51–58)

After three days shut away, Kira decides the fastest way out of the contract is through it: give Derek his heir, end the farce, and disappear into human territory. She invites him to her student club's first fundraiser, spends his black card cheerfully, and redecorates his master suite in cream and sage, complete with a life-sized teddy bear she names Derek.

Two threads start quietly. At a mall, a middle-aged woman sees Kira, gasps "Claire?", and flees. And in the shadows, Uncle Crane tells Brian not to remove the new wife yet: let Derek fall completely in love with her, "just like his father did", then take her away when it will break him.

Nana returns from a mysterious trip and announces a week-long honeymoon. Both newlyweds react exactly as you would expect.

The handbag (chapters 59–64)

On the way to Snow Crest, Derek insults a hungry pregnant woman and her husband in a roadside diner. She hits him with her handbag. His guards freeze. Kira steps in front of him, "who the hell are you to put your hands on my husband?", then gives the woman her own food and pinches Derek: "She's pregnant, you numpty!"

The beach house belongs to two kind caretakers, Alistar and Flora, who see in a day what the court hasn't in weeks: she brings out more emotion in him in ten minutes than anyone has managed in years. Asked where her loyalty lies, Kira answers honestly: only to herself.

Article 12.4 (chapters 65–69)

Far away, Rolf asks the eastern werewolf Alphas to go to war with the Lycans and to pledge themselves to Tyron, the bound King of the Umbras. Lydia muses: what if the Nexus is already within reach?

At the beach house Kira reads Derek's Volkov merger contract and finds the trap in Article 12.4, a clause that would let a rival audit his treasuries. "You're lucky I'm a nerd, Derek." That night a storm triggers a night terror, "Untie me! There's fire!", and Derek holds her until morning. The next day his lawyer is run off the road.

The memories (chapters 70–76)

In the town, Kira watches a young mother not survive childbirth and breaks down. Then Maya, Flora's silent granddaughter, takes her hand, and a memory returns: at twelve, Rolf tied her to her bed in a storm and set the room alight, saying she looked just like her mother, Claire. A woman cut her free and carried her out: Lydia. More memories follow. Each time Rolf tried, Lydia arrived in time.

On the deck, Derek tells her she is not a curse, and admits he hasn't slept properly since his family was lost to "a traitor". A doctor at The Central names her memory gaps betrayal trauma.

The banquet (chapters 77–86)

Alpha Lucas of Snow Crest throws a dinner. Kira out-argues the Lunas on pack law, feels a strange déjà vu meeting Alpha Braxton of Crystal Moon, and watches Derek's ex, Sandra, rest a hand on his. Then the lights go out.

Gammas shift into Umbras, shadow wolves that can wear the faces of those they have taken. Derek freezes in a flashback until Braxton snaps him out of it. Kira is lured into the woods by a "servant", bites her way free, and Derek tracks her by her jasmine scent: "Got you." He carries her out barefoot.

The traitor (chapters 87–90)

Alistar tells the history. Derek's father, King Maurice, bound the Shadow King; only a Nexus can destroy his essence, and his blood merged with a Nexus would set him free. After the war, at the peace banquet, the Lycans were massacred, and the werewolf blamed for it was Alpha Rolf Thornclaw. Kira realises the traitor Derek swore to destroy is her father.

Maya finally speaks: "The battle has only just begun, and you must never trust anyone." Then Sandra arrives with a boy who has Derek's amber eyes. Derek greets him gently, has Sandra removed, and tells Kira the boy, Ralph, is not his.

What we noticed

This is the arc where the romance becomes real and the mystery becomes dangerous, at the same time. Notice who keeps saving Kira in her memories. Notice who first wonders aloud about the Nexus. The book is laying a trail long before it asks you to follow it.

Previous: Part 1: The Bride Swap. Next: Part 3: Ruby's Fall.

Questions readers ask

What are the Umbras?

Shadow wolves, the old enemies of the Lycans. They can take the face and scent of anyone they have taken, but not their memories. Their king, the Shadow King, was bound by Derek's father.

What is a Nexus?

Alistar explains in chapter 87: a rare power that can destroy the Shadow King's essence, or, if his blood merges with it, set him free.

What does Kira remember at Snow Crest?

That Rolf tried to end her life when she was twelve, and that Lydia saved her each time. Her mother's name was Claire.
