Defying the Lycan King recap part 4 covers chapters 151–209. Spoilers up to chapter 209. The novel is for adult readers; this recap is non-graphic, and the attacks are described only in outline.
Heart or spine (chapters 151–160)
Kira's wolf may be waking. Jessica confesses that Kai is her mate, a problem when their peoples are at war. Brian corners Kira again: the white lilies after her fall were his, and he offers to protect her, "even from Derek".
Two days before the coronation, the palace is attacked by what look like Northern Lycans. Derek hands Kira a knife: "Heart or spine. Don't be brave. Be alive." Kai is badly hurt protecting the gate. Declan, still suspicious, reminds Kira that she arrived under someone else's name.
Crowned (chapters 161–171)
The attackers turn out to be Umbras wearing the faces of fallen Northern gammas. The elders want to blame the werewolf Queen and postpone the coronation; Derek refuses both. Kira gives a sample to search for a donor for Sasha's son, and Jessica's family turns out to have been hunted by Rolf and warned by Lydia.
Then a revelation the reader alone sees: Uncle Crane is King Maurice's elder twin, and Brian is Crane's son. On coronation morning a courier brings Kira blackmail photos of her secret meeting with Lydia.
The ceremony goes ahead. Maya scatters petals, Derek is crowned, and when Nana asks for objections to Queen Kira, the doors open and Brian strolls in, then simply sits down. Nana crowns her. Upstairs, Kai wakes to Jessica saying she would love to be his wife.
Let's stop pretending (chapters 172–176)
In the garden Brian admits sending the photos; Kira puts Derek's knife to his throat. Alpha Braxton starts to tell her something important and is interrupted. Derek, jealous and hurt, tears up their contract. She slaps him; he asks why she can't just be loyal to him. Then the truth finally comes out in a better way: "Can't you see that I like you a lot?" Kira: "I could never betray you. Not in this lifetime." He is moving against Rolf tomorrow. She tells him to do what he must.
The real traitor (chapters 177–191)
While Kira attends the Queen's Conference at The Central, three things happen at once.
Rolf and Lydia, playing chess in a forest tent, reveal the book's biggest early twist: Crane, not Rolf, arranged the massacre of his own people and pinned it on Rolf. Crane opened Dravengard's gates to them.
Derek's raid on Rolf's camp is a trap, and the camp explodes. Dravengard, with half its fighters away, is besieged by Umbras hiding among its own gammas. Nana, revealed as "Gene, the Warrior Princess" of legend, fights beside Angelica and Kai, and Jessica shifts for the first time to save him.
At the hotel, Claudia, once Claire's head omega, tells Kira everything: her mother Claire Ironfang, the true heir of Moonfang, is alive; Rolf is not her father; her father was a Lycan, Alpha Ethan; Braxton is her twin; and she is the Nexus. Then the Umbras break in. Kira fights her way out, and in the car park Brian sedates her and drives off with her.
The hideout (chapters 192–206)
Rolf and Lydia complain that Kira took off her wedding ring: it was a tracker. Derek finds the chip under the gem and fears the worst. Crane drops the blackmail photos on the council table.
Kira wakes chained in Brian's hideout. He tells her about Derek's original plan, combs her hair, and insists he loves her. She fakes acceptance, takes the housekeeper by surprise with a sharpened toothbrush, and can't bring herself to finish Brian when he catches her. Brian's wife Olivia, who has been listening through a hidden earpiece, knocks him out with a frying pan: "Let's go."
The white Lycan (chapters 207–209)
Kira comes home to find Derek has announced his marriage to Chloe. Chloe has convinced him the chip in the ring was Lydia's listening device, carried in by Kira. In front of Nana, Crane, Declan and Kai, Derek confirms his old plan and accuses her of spying. Then he repeats Rolf's cruellest words. Nana slaps him.
Kira realises Lydia planted the chip at their café meeting. She answers with the scoreboard one last time: "Pathetic Kira: 0. Monster King Derek: 100. You won." And the girl everyone called wolfless shifts for the first time, into a white Lycan with silver eyes, and runs.
What we noticed
Derek's cruelty here is the low point of the book, and it is meant to be. Every clue he needed was in front of him. The irony is total: the only person in the room who was never a traitor is the one he calls one, while the man who orchestrated everything watches from the table.
