Defying the Lycan King Recap Part 5: Crystal Moon

Kira meets her mother, Crane confesses, a pregnancy, the Wolf Council, an apology in a garden and the refused bond. Chapters 210–257 of Defying the Lycan King.

Defying the Lycan King recap part 5 covers chapters 210–257. Spoilers up to chapter 257. The novel is for adult readers; this recap is non-graphic.

Brother, sister (chapters 210–219)

Derek feels the bond tear as Kira runs; Leo howls; Nana faints. Kira's scent simply ends in the forest: a man with no scent carried her away. She wakes in Braxton's arms. "Brother." "Sister."

At Crystal Moon, Braxton explains how long he has watched over her: Claudia recognised her at the mall, he saw her at Snow Crest and knew, and the guard Milo has been his eyes in Dravengard. Their mother is a semi-Nexus, and a true Nexus can shift even as a baby, which is why someone kept Kira's wolf buried for years.

Then the scene readers wait two hundred chapters for: Kira meets her mother. Claire, who has not spoken in years, says the name she gave her daughter, "Serene?", and speaks: she is so sorry she couldn't get to her. Connor finds Kira soon after, promises to keep her secret, and agrees to watch Crane.

Crane's confession (chapters 214–225)

Connor tells Derek what Claudia said: Kira's mother is alive, Rolf is not her father, and she is a hybrid. Derek finally understands Kira was always loyal, and weeps. Connor, loyal to his Queen, lies about where she is.

Derek and Connor trap Crane. He is caught boasting about Derek's mother, then cornered by a honey trap, a cloned phone and a hidden shrine. In the dungeon he confesses: he believed Dravengard should have been his as the elder twin, and he arranged the massacre that took his own brother and pinned it on Rolf. Derek keeps him alive. Claire begins training Kira, and warns her the Shadow King has a wife who is no less dangerous than he is.

Pregnant, not handicapped (chapters 226–235)

A month passes. Derek publicly apologises to the werewolves. Kai, who never stopped looking, finds Jessica on campus by tracking her SIM card. Kira, sparring better than most gammas, faints at breakfast: she is six weeks pregnant.

Braxton wants to hide the pup from the King. Kira won't: "It's his pup." She admits her own share of the silence that broke them, then announces her next move. She will petition the Wolf Council for her mother's pack. When Braxton says she can't in her condition: "I'm pregnant, Braxton. Not handicapped."

At the council she faces Scott and Chloe, shows her birth certificate, and releases the aura she had masked: "Am I wolf enough now to contend for an Alpha position?" In the corridor she walks straight into Derek. Both their beasts cry out the same word. He realises she is his soulbond. She tells him they'll talk when she is ready. Then her mother steps out of the car.

You have ten minutes (chapters 236–238)

Derek writes Braxton a humble letter, and Braxton lets him into the garden. Kira gives him ten minutes. He confesses everything, including the cruellest version of his original plan, and how it fell apart the moment she walked in: "you became my light." She tells him he broke her, admits her own walls, and then tells him she is pregnant: "I suppose I fulfilled my part of the contract after all."

Declan comes to apologise. Kira forgave him long ago, but she won't cancel the divorce. Then Declan tells her Nana is ill and refusing to fight. Two days later Kira is at Derek's gym door: they will keep playing the marriage, "but this time, we play by my rules."

Her rules (chapters 239–257)

Nana revives the moment she hears about the pup. Kira plans a quiet divorce in a few months; Derek agrees to her terms and secretly tells his doctor the truth about his cough. Her refusal of the bond is draining his beast, and he will not tell her: he refuses to be chosen out of pity.

The first hearing is Derek's plan from start to finish. Rolf lies with forged papers; Kira asks him one question, "Where is your first wife, Claire?"; and Braxton walks in with Claire, alive. Rolf's legs give out. Nana visits Crane and disowns him in two cold sentences. Derek builds a crib for the pup and falls asleep with a fever just as Kira whispers that she is the Nexus; a few nights later he is painting the nursery at midnight.

While he is away at a summit, Kira finds two blood-stained handkerchiefs in his study, and Claire recognises the sign from her own past. Kira gets in a car.

What we noticed

This is the book's healing arc, and its smartest move is giving both sides the blame they earned. Derek's apology is specific; Kira's admission is honest. The refused bond turns their standoff into a clock, and the reader knows something Kira doesn't for twenty chapters.

Previous: Part 4: The White Lycan. Next: Part 6: The Nexus.
