Defying the Lycan King recap part 7 covers chapters 298–318, the sequel arc after the main story's ending. Spoilers for the whole book. This arc is still ongoing; we will update this recap as new chapters arrive.
Three years later (chapters 298–303)
Kai Mondragon is twenty-six, the new Alpha of Crescent Moon, and still refuses to say Jessica is gone: no one was ever found. His brother Tan never fully recovered from the war, and his mother Angelica wants an heir. Her candidate is Alicia, Kai's childhood friend and now Head of Operations at his company. Kai visits the shore where Jessica was lost and talks to the sea.
Meanwhile, in Orange Grove, a waitress at The Copper Lantern has woken up three years ago with a bandaged head and no memory. Her boss calls her every name but the right one; her papers say Sidonie. A protective man named Sebastian cared for her through the worst months and hates any mention of the city of Aethelwulf. When a customer crosses a line and her boss sides with him, Sidonie's friend Odelia finds her a job in exactly that city.
At a shopping centre, Kai sees ginger curls and runs shouting "Jessica!". The woman runs too. He calls off the engagement anyway. Derek and Kira, now parents of twins Tristan and Trisha, believe him.
Somebody was in the system (chapters 304–309)
Every security clip that would show the woman's face turns out to be "corrupted". Derek, who had doubts, changes his mind: somebody has been in that system. Kai promises to find out who.
Sidonie, now working in the restaurant of Kai's own company, is sent upstairs with the Chairman's coffee. Alicia sees her and falls over in shock. She knows that face. Her mother Valerie, the woman behind the bridge, tells her to keep the girl away from Kai at any cost.
The coffee (chapters 310–313)
Sidonie trips and spills a mug down the Chairman's white suit. Kai looks up, and it is Jessica. He holds her in front of the whole restaurant, "I'd know you if I were blind, deaf, and lost in the dark", but she smells human, and she insists her name is Sidonie. Her employee file says Sidonie Hart, twenty-three, from Creek Town, with real records. The next day Kai jumps the lunch queue to tease her, then apologises for grabbing her.
Sebastian (chapters 314–318)
When Sidonie laughs about it at home, Sebastian explodes, calls Kai a stalker, insists she is Sidonie from Creek Town, his childhood friend, and storms out. In the woods, the "human" Sebastian shifts into an enormous black beast.
Kai shows Derek the woman at dawn, then takes her phone, saves himself as her emergency contact and sends her photos of the two of them. Alicia demands the engagement; Kai ends it kindly and tells her never to call Jessica dead again. Alicia storms into the restaurant and attacks Sidonie, until Gloria the manager defends her with a spatula. Something in Alicia's eyes isn't quite human.
Questions we're asking
- Who is Sebastian? A shifter pretending to be human, who brought her to Orange Grove and knows she is in danger in Aethelwulf.
- Why can't Kai sense her? Her scent and her wolf, Ginger, are gone. Something was done to her.
- Who is the woman in the dark room? In chapter 310 she tells an unnamed man that time is running out for "justice".
Our read
The sequel opens with a classic amnesia setup, but the details are sharp: forged-looking real paperwork, a "glitch" too convenient to be one, and a protector who is lying about what he is. Kai, hardened by grief, is a different hero from Derek, and the book enjoys letting Jessica out-talk him.
Previous: Part 6: The Nexus. For Kai and Jessica's whole story, see Kai and Jessica.
Questions readers ask
Is Jessica alive?
Yes. Three years after the bridge she is living as "Sidonie Hart" with no memory, and Kai finds her in chapter 310.
Why can't Kai smell Jessica?
Nobody knows yet. She smells human and her wolf seems gone; Kai suspects the accident was no accident.
Is the sequel finished?
No. Chapter 318 is the latest chapter we have read, and the arc is still being published.
