Kai and Jessica in Defying the Lycan King: this relationship analysis covers their story through chapter 318, with full spoilers. The novel is for adult readers; we keep everything non-graphic.
Two people on the wrong sides
Kai is Derek's younger cousin, a flirt with the best intelligence network in Lycan territory. Jessica Ashfang is Kira's best friend, a ginger-haired werewolf law student whose family was hunted by Rolf. At Kira's fundraiser in chapter 114 Jessica's wolf, Ginger, recognises Kai as her mate, while he flirts with other girls. It is a funny start to a serious problem: their peoples are at war.
Choosing each other
When Kai is badly hurt defending the palace, Jessica sits by his bed until his heart steadies, and tells him she'd love to be his wife on coronation day. When his mother pushes another girl at him, Kai says it plainly: "Jessica has already found her mate. And that mate is me." When Jessica suggests rejecting the bond to make life easier, his body reacts, and he refuses. During the siege of Dravengard she shifts for the first time to save him, and he throws his own knife to save her.
The safe house
When Kira is framed, Kai smuggles Jessica and her family to a safe house, and they vanish. For a month he waits outside her campus every day. When her SIM card wakes up, he runs across the grounds and finds her at the top of the library stairs. Angelica later accepts her completely after a home-cooked dinner, the "mother-in-law cooking test", and Kai announces they'll marry at the Red Moon Festival.
The marquee
Before the final battle, Kai says goodbye as if he might not come back. Jessica refuses to hear it: they have a wedding coming, and she has paid a non-refundable deposit on a marquee. "I'll come back. I promise you." He does. She is the one who doesn't come home: on the last page of the main story, her car goes off a bridge.
Three years later
The sequel belongs to them. Kai, now Alpha and hardened by grief, never accepted she was gone. Jessica, as Sidonie Hart, has no memory, a human scent and a protector, Sebastian, who turns out to be a shifter in disguise. When she spills coffee on Kai in chapter 310, he knows her at once; she only knows that his laugh feels familiar. He gives her space, then takes her phone and fills it with photos of the life she can't remember.
Why they matter to the main story
Kai and Jessica are more than a subplot. Jessica is Kira's first ally, the friend who helps her slip her guards, researches pack law with her on the phone, and brings the law files to the hearing. Kai is the one who digs up the truth about Scott's father, which wins Kira her mother's pack, and the one who tells Derek, again and again, that he is wrong about his wife. Their own romance mirrors the main one: a Lycan and a werewolf, a bond that has to survive a war between their peoples. When the main story ends on Jessica's bridge, it ends on the couple who helped hold the other one together.
Our read
Kai and Jessica were the book's comic relief, and the sequel turns them into its heart. The bond is the most interesting part: Kai can't sense her, which means someone did something to her, not just to her memory. Our recap of the sequel so far is in Part 7: Three Years Later.
Questions readers ask
Are Kai and Jessica soulbonds?
Yes. Jessica's wolf recognises Kai at the fundraiser in chapter 114, and Kai's bond makes him sick when she talks about rejecting it.
What happened to Jessica?
Her car went off a bridge at the end of chapter 297. Three years later she is alive, with no memory, living as Sidonie Hart.
Does Kai find her?
Yes, in chapter 310, when she spills coffee on him in his own company's restaurant. She doesn't remember him yet.
