Greymoor Academy Recap Part 5: The Keeper
Gruer, the tonics, the hidden library, the Ridge, Kara, Elara Thorne's vision and Margaret's plan for Samhain. Chapters 175–204 of Greymoor Academy.

Greymoor Academy recap part 5 covers chapters 175–204, the stretch where the romance becomes a mystery about other worlds. Spoilers for this range only.
A stranger in the garden (chapters 175–181)
Looking for Soren one night, Maisie finds a starving, hurt man hiding on the estate. It is Phillip Gruer, the escaped bond scientist from her class. She feeds him and gives him clothes. When he returns, healed, his eyes have a green slit, and he tells her something she cannot forget: people do not survive the bite, and if she did, someone made her that way.
The Queen's daily fertility tonics make Maisie ill for five days. The four nurse her in turns, but her Lycan goes silent. For two weeks she swings between cravings, tears and exhaustion, and she steals their shirts and aftershave to sleep. Quinlan calls it nesting. Soren pulls her father's Council file and finds almost nothing, as if Richter Adams simply appeared one day.
The hidden library (chapters 182–188)
Lana apologises, properly this time. She remembers men who never called their father Richter, a mother who used another name, and a house burned down after their deaths. She warns Maisie not to dig. Maisie digs.
In the library archives, Bastian Hunt catches her when she falls from a ladder, and a black book turns out to be a lever. They drop into a secret room lined with silver, with a shelf of forbidden texts and a book in a language Maisie can somehow read. On the floor is an old summoning circle.
Maisie is furious that Soren negotiated with Margaret about her without asking her. Her first translation is a creation myth: a goddess whose firstborn warred until their world was ruined, and who reached this world through a Gatekeeper and the old bloodlines of hunters. Then she cuts herself on a mirror and the cut will not close. Mercer and five doctors confirm it: the Queen's tonics contained blockers that have left Maisie nearly mortal.
The Ridge (chapters 189–198)
Margaret invites Maisie to dinner at the Ridge, a fortress carved into a mountain where the veil between worlds is thin. The moment Maisie sees her mother, she faints, and dreams of a woman named Elara Thorne pressing a ruby into a rock while six men kneel around her. A rift opens. A voice says the price has been paid. All six men lie still.
When she wakes, she meets Kara, the girl from the Hunt, fully healed: her half-sister, fourteen, a bookworm the other girls ignore. Maisie tells her she never has to shrink herself to be loved. At dinner Margaret calls her Adeline, calls her father a clever man who made a foolish mistake, and barely remembers that Lana exists.
Kisten, drunk and frightened, asks where Maisie will be on Samhain and whether the dreams have started. Soon she is waking up in the woods near the cliff, sleepwalking. Then Margaret explains everything herself. Maisie is a keeper, born to open the gate. Margaret made her stronger on purpose. On Samhain the Queen will be assassinated, the sentient ruby will seek its line and find Maisie, and the gate will open, with her four mates as the price, just as Elara's six paid it.
Maisie tells the four. They think she has taken something.
The demon in pyjamas (chapters 199–204)
Her translation goes further: the Convergence bond was invented so that a keeper's mates would bear the cost of opening a gate instead of the keeper. Seven days before Halloween, sleepless and hearing a voice call her "keeper", Maisie draws the circle, seals it herself, and summons Phillip Gruer in designer pyjamas and a sleep mask, furious at being woken. Gruer is a demon.
For the price of a memory, he answers her questions. The rift cannot be stopped while she lives. The only way to save her mates is to break the bond, which may cost her life. Elara Thorne, he adds, did not survive long after reaching this world. As he leaves, he stares at Maisie's stomach and vanishes.
Maisie makes a plan: run away on Halloween night, far from Ashbourne, so there is no keeper for the crown to find, and warn the Queen. At Lana's dress fitting, Lyon finds her crying and checks her arms for bruises. It is, the narration warns, the last time they will ever really talk. On Halloween evening, she puts Soren's ring on her finger.
What we noticed
- The tonics, the blockers and the Queen's plan in chapter 163 fit together. The Queen was weakening Maisie long before Samhain.
- Gruer's stare at her stomach in chapter 202 and her sensitivity to smells later on are the pregnancy clues.
- Everything converges on one night: Lana's wedding, the Queen's deadline and Margaret's coup. See our lore explainer.
