Greymoor Academy Lore Explained: Keepers and the Rift
Lycans, Erasthai, the Convergence, the ruby crown, keepers, the Ridge and the door between worlds. Greymoor Academy's lore in one place.

Our Greymoor Academy lore explained guide covers everything revealed up to chapter 273. Spoilers for the whole book so far.
Greymoor Academy hides a lot of worldbuilding behind its romance. Here is the lore in the order you need it.
1. Wolves and the rejected bond
Ashbourne is werewolf country, and Greymoor Academy trains future Alphas, Betas and Gammas. A fated mate bond can be rejected, but, as Professor Halven explains in chapter 2, it never truly breaks. The rejected wolf suffers, and only the Lycan Queen can formally dissolve a bond. A wolf who cannot shift is legally "wolfless" and can lose their pack.
2. Lycans
Lycans are the royal race: far stronger than werewolves, with black eyes when their power rises, and nearly extinct. Only nineteen purebloods remain when the story starts. Their society is matriarchal: children take their mother's name, and the Queen rules. The royal houses include the Blacks (the crown), the Grahams, the Chastains, the MacKeltars and the fallen Ivanovs. House Hunt, the first and strongest line, was exiled.
3. The bite and the change
A bite usually means death. The Queen explains in chapter 70 that the change only works when you are claimed by your Erasthai. Phillip Gruer adds a darker note in chapter 176: anyone who survives is an anomaly, and anomalies are made, not born.
4. Erasthai and the Convergence
Lycans have three kinds of union: Erasthai, a soul bond described as a root system rather than a tie; the Convergence, where one woman is bonded to several males as one soul; and ordinary marriage. The tradition is that a woman chooses four to eight mates. Erasthai and Convergence bonds tie lives together: if one is lost, all are lost. Once sealed, they cannot be rejected.
5. The ruby crown
The Lycan crown carries the Goddess's Eye, a sentient deep-red ruby. The crown resizes to fit whoever the Goddess chooses. It calls Queen Lysandra a false queen in chapter 163, stops answering her in chapter 271, and calls Maisie its queen in chapter 267. Maisie's Lycan says the ruby has been corrupted since the old days, and that it will need destroying.
6. The Hunts and the Exiles
The Exiles are Lycans cast out of court, based in Costa Ridge and led by Margaret Hunt, the Exiled Queen. The official story is that the Hunts ended the previous Queen, Soren's mother. The ruby and the thing in the Queen's dungeon suggest Lysandra did it and let the Hunts take the blame.
7. Keepers and the Gatekeeper
Maisie's translations in the hidden library tell the origin story. The Goddess's firstborn warred until their own world was ruined. Through a Gatekeeper, the last of a race that could open paths between worlds, they reached this one. The first keeper was of the Goddess's own bloodline. Only one keeper is born per generation, and opening a gate costs the keeper's life, so the dying firstborn created the Convergence to let the keeper's mates bear the cost instead.
Maisie's father was Silas Thorne, and Maisie's visions show Elara Thorne, the first keeper, opening a rift with the ruby while her six mates pay the price. Margaret says she made Maisie stronger on purpose. Gruer calls her the only keeper left in both worlds.
8. The Ridge and sacred ground
The Ridge in Costa Ridge is where the veil between worlds is thin; its highest cliff was once called a gateway to the world of the gods. Greymoor Academy stands on similar sacred ground. Gruer explains in chapter 232 that four things open a rift: the stone, the keeper, a sacrifice and the altar. Three were present at the Ridge on Samhain, enough to crack the veil. Creatures began slipping through.
9. The other world
The creatures that come through are winged, grey and many-jointed, and they recognise Maisie by name: Thorne. Behind them comes a dragon, one of an ancient race of guardians turned conquerors that the Moon Mother cast out. It wants the door open for its kind, and it knows the name Florian, the violet-eyed mate from Elara's vision, which it smells on Mercer.
10. The Goddess
The Moon Goddess is not just a figure of speech. In chapter 268 she answers Maisie, warns her there is a price, and accepts Maisie's argument that she has already paid. Then Maisie's Lycan, an ancient being that has lived other lives before, closes the rift.
Our read
The lore makes the romance matter. A book that could have been four princes and a crown turns out to be about a bond designed to sacrifice the people you love, and a heroine who refuses to pay that price. Read our mate bond essay, Recap Part 5: The Keeper and predictions after chapter 273.
