Our Jinx's Mistake review covers the opening chapters of The Salvation Knights MC: Jinx's Mistake by Kj, published on Dreame. Our copy of the repost starts at chapter 2. It is trending under another name right now; please read it on the official platform.
If you like your heroines loud, petty and completely justified, meet Deidra.
The setup
Deidra runs a small plant shop in the town where she grew up. Her parents, a firefighter and a nurse everyone loved, died years ago, and Deb moved in to raise her. Her only real enemy is the owner of the bakery across the street, who comes in every two weeks to cause a scene.
Then there is Jinx Roth, a member of the Salvation Knights motorcycle club, whom Deidra has traded insults with for twenty years. He calls her "Thorn". His seven-year-old son Waylen, whose mother is long gone, spends every afternoon in her shop because she is calm and she cares. Two years ago Deidra marched into the club's clubhouse with a feverish Waylen and told a room full of bikers exactly what she thought of them.
A week before Christmas
The wedding is a month away, at the Greenhouse, the venue Deidra waited two years to book. She comes home early and finds her fiancé Theo with Sophie, her best friend since preschool and her maid of honour.
The betrayal is bad. The audacity is worse. Sophie doesn't apologise: she says Theo never really loved Deidra, that they fell in love, and that the wedding will still happen, at Deidra's venue, with Sophie as the bride. She fully expects Deidra to forgive her and come.
Deidra chases them out of her apartment so loudly that she ends up spending the night in a police cell decorated with Christmas lights.
What works
- The voice. Deidra's narration is funny, profane and self-aware. She knows she is "a little insane" and owns it.
- The cellmate. Honey, one of the club's regulars, tells Deidra that Waylen talks about "Thorn" all the time. The seed is planted.
- The road out. Deb convinces her to take the snowy Colorado cabin trip she booked for Theo and stay until New Year. "Maybe you'll get a Christmas miracle."
What to know before you start
The language is strong and the humour is crude in places. Deidra's way of dealing with Theo and Sophie is a fantasy you should not try at home. Jinx barely appears in the opening; this is a slow lead-in to an enemies-to-lovers romance.
Who it's for
Readers of biker romance, single-dad stories, small-town holiday romance and anyone who wants a heroine who refuses to be the bigger person.
Our first impression: the funniest opening on this list. Bring tissues for nothing; bring popcorn for everything.
