Who is Sparrow in Two Can Play? Spoilers up to chapter 300, with an update to chapter 500. His storyline involves pressure and bargaining; we discuss it in general terms.
For two hundred chapters, Sparrow is the tattooed man at Dominic's shoulder. He handles "difficult situations", runs a club called The Den, and names humiliating prices to people who want something from his boss. Chapters 241–300 give him his own story, and he becomes one of the most important characters in the book.
Alexander Ford
Sparrow's real name is Alexander Ford. Dominic's father adopted him from an orphanage out of pity, and the teenage Alexander resented his new brother for everything Dominic had: a loving father, a name, a future. "Every kindness he showed me, I read as condescension." He trusted his gang instead.
Then Bryan, his closest gang brother, betrayed him in a warehouse. The attack was meant for Sparrow, and Dominic stepped into it. Sparrow's question as he held him, "Why? You know I have never once treated you like family", gets the answer that defines the rest of his life: "Because you are my brother."
The vow
Dominic lived. Sparrow prayed for the first time, in a church. When Dominic woke three days later, he made a vow: "From today, my life belongs to you." Dominic answered that he didn't owe him anything.
That's why Sparrow calls Celeste "sister-in-law", refuses her money, and treats her requests as orders. And it's why Dominic's grandmother, who once treated the street kid kindly, has been cold to him ever since.
Big Bryan
The man behind that attack is now Big Bryan, head of the Phantom Circle, the blackmail ring behind Julian's hundred-million-dollar trap. He controls his recruits with a "medicine" called Hemovax, and he has worse plans for some of the young women he holds. Sparrow once let him go at Dominic's request. When Scarlett arrives asking for help against Bryan, that truce is over.
Scarlett and Tasha
Scarlett spent years positioning herself to reach Sparrow. She is the only person in this stretch he can't read completely. She hides that she's a hacker and a trained fighter, and she knows more about his history than she admits. He is drawn to her in a way that surprises him.
His price for helping is where the book gets uncomfortable. He demands the women's company, and when that plan collapses he offers a one-year contract marriage instead. Tasha becomes the bride: innocent enough to satisfy Granny, and valuable enough to Big Bryan to lure him out.
Hero or villain?
Neither, which is what makes him interesting. Sparrow draws hard lines about what he will never do, and then bargains in ways that make that line look thin. He's fiercely loyal to exactly one person, and to everyone else he's transactional. The book seems to be setting him up for the same journey Dominic made: from a man who uses people to a man who learns to love someone. Whether it gets there is one of the biggest open questions going into chapter 301.
Update: chapters 301–500
Sparrow's next hundred chapters make both halves of him bigger. He takes Big Bryan's operation apart in one night and personally gives seventy-two girls the antidote. We learn he secretly chairs a skyscraper company, Xander Corporation. He also turns shockingly cruel toward Tasha when he believes she and Scarlett are playing him, and then punches a wall to prove he's sorry.
Most of all, he starts losing the argument with himself about Scarlett. "Scarlett. What are you doing to me?" is the first time the man who "does not do love" admits it might be happening. For the full story, read Recap Part 19.
