Two Can Play Recap Part 15: The Island and the Fortress

Sparrow wins over his grandmother with a fake fiancée, Scarlett hacks her way across the city to find her niece, Seraphine's island gets darker, and Julian makes a vow.

This Two Can Play recap part 15 covers chapters 358–386 and 397–400, with spoilers. Seraphine's storyline involves exploitation; we refer to it only in general terms.

"I do not want my wife to ever have a reason to be hurt"

Dominic answers his grandmother's condition in one sitting. He won't take Imelda as a "sworn sister" and keep another woman close: "I do not want my wife to ever have a reason to be hurt." He won't pick her a husband either, because "good" is subjective and he refuses to carry the blame if it goes wrong. He'll suggest introductions, and he'll call Imelda's father himself, because he's the one who broke the promise.

"If you accept Celeste and respect her as my wife, I can forgive everything." Then, on his way out: "Remember to check your blood pressure."

In the car he calls Imelda's father and books the flight. Then they argue about dates: engagement party a week after Sparrow's wedding, and the wedding two weeks after that. She wanted a month. He wanted a week.

Sierra's choice

Sierra is waiting outside Helix, on her knees. Felix made her lie in exchange for a promise of marriage, and she has dropped the charges. They're registering the marriage tomorrow, and would Celeste be a witness? "Don't you love yourself at all?… I am allergic to stupidity." Celeste walks inside.

Sparrow's fiancée

Sparrow needs a fiancée to get his grandmother off his back, and Tasha needs a new face. A boutique turns her into "a bride out of a storybook": a white dress, no makeup, a plain gold band. At dinner, Granny asks how they met, and Sparrow tells a completely invented story (a hotel waitress, a dying mother, a cruel manager) so movingly that Granny adopts Tasha on the spot. "You can consider me your family from now on." Tasha cries real tears, and Sparrow can't tell whether she's acting.

Then Scarlett arrives. She has hacked her way through the hotel's cameras and half the city's traffic feeds to find her niece, and she's standing at the door with Maya and Jasmine. Granny throws an ugly insult at them to their faces. Scarlett smiles, leaves politely, and waits outside in the dark. And Sparrow tells his grandmother, for the first time, that judging people before you know them is "distasteful and low".

The fortress

Sparrow takes all four women to his fortress: razor-wire walls, armed guards, an eye scanner at the gate. His housekeeper, Madam Lily, is the closest thing to a mother he has left. The treatment for Big Bryan's "medicine" starts tomorrow. Jasmine is smitten with him. Sparrow, who "does not like anyone in his bed", can't sleep, and goes to fetch Scarlett at midnight just to have her there. "I brought you here to sleep."

Meanwhile, Maya asks about Carter, the boyfriend she believes is still in Julian's hands. Scarlett lies. We learn from Julian's own chapter that Carter did not survive.

Seraphine's island

Seraphine's "world tour" has turned strange: fine hotels, no attention, no new money. Then comes an island of mansions where "all the men are big shots", and a cheque for $50 billion she can't cash for a week, conditional on her not "embarrassing" Emerson in front of his friends.

What follows is the island's monthly "tradition", and Seraphine is the evening's entertainment. A woman slips her a pill to make it bearable. The book's own narration warns: I thought the pill was a blessing. I wish I'd realized sooner that it brought nothing but destruction. She's still thinking about Celeste.

Julian's vow

Julian wakes on his own floor, learns Scarlett took down his men alone, tracks her as far as Sparrow's walls and doesn't dare go further. Riley, in hospital, finally admits her mother's plan was wrong. Julian tells his mother never to try anything like it again.

Then he receives the divorce ruling, and he follows Celeste all day. He watches her doubt Dominic, and he's hopeful. Then he watches, from a gap in the garden fence, as she comes back with a ring on her finger.

"Celeste, in this life, if I cannot have you, no one else can."

What we noticed

  • Dominic and Sparrow both face their grandmother this week, and both put a woman's dignity above her approval.
  • Seraphine's arc is now a cautionary tale. The more money she's promised, the less control she has.
  • Julian's vow is the most dangerous line he's spoken. It changes him from a heartbroken ex into a threat.
