This Two Can Play recap part 13 covers chapters 301–334, with spoilers. This arc includes a pregnancy loss; we mention it gently and without detail.

The walk-out

While Julian sleeps off a bottle of whiskey, Scarlett walks back into his building dressed in black. Six guards, zero noise: she takes each of them down with a technique that puts a man to sleep without lasting harm. Then she lays them outside the door so they'll be found. She frees Maya and Jasmine and leaves Julian on his own floor.

She could end him right there. She doesn't: "I was a survivor."

In the cab, Jasmine asks the hard question: you let Julian hurt me to protect Tasha, didn't you? Scarlett doesn't deny it. She apologises. Both women say that if they survive Big Bryan's "medicine", they have families of their own to settle scores with. And when they reach the penthouse, Sparrow and Tasha are gone.

"I will marry Celeste" … and lunch every day

Across town, it's the softest morning of Celeste's life. Dominic has turned off his phone to watch her put on lipstick. "Let the board fire me." He announces that her lunch hours belong to him every day for the rest of their lives, and refuses to wipe her lip gloss off his mouth: "a badge of honour."

Felix

Then Felix storms into Helix demanding Celeste "return" Seraphine, sure that she has hidden her away. Celeste proves Sera has simply blocked his number. Then Dominic sends her a live feed of where Seraphine actually is: abroad, very much free, and very happy with a room full of rich admirers. Felix calls it a fake and has to be dragged out screaming.

In the lobby, Sierra runs to him and throws her arms around him. He shoves her away, hard. She falls, and she loses the baby.

Celeste rides with her to the hospital and breaks down in the waiting room. Felix kneels at Sierra's bed promising marriage and "another baby". Celeste calls the police on her brother.

And Sierra, to keep Felix, tells the officers that Celeste pushed her.

Handcuffs

Celeste is arrested and taken to the station. She keeps her head, hands over the Helix lobby footage, and within the hour Felix admits the truth. He's arrested and she's released. "Celeste, please, I am your brother!" She answers from the doorway: someone who put that woman above the life of his own child can never be her brother.

She tells her bodyguards not to breathe a word to Dominic.

"No more Mrs. Fisher"

That afternoon, in a new emerald dress, Celeste walks into the courthouse and walks out divorced. The court has also awarded her half of Julian's assets, about $450 million. She had told Dominic she didn't want a cent, and he insisted she get what she's entitled to. She kisses the certificate in the lobby and sends a photo to a blogger: Celeste Adams has been officially divorced from Julian Fisher.

The recording

Outside, Julian is waiting in a neck brace, sobbing. He says Dominic has been seeing other women and plays her a recording of Dominic's voice: "This is payback… I am not going to stop until I get bored."

Dominic arrives and moves Julian away from her. Then he cancels their celebration lunch for "something important" and pats her cheek. An audio expert confirms the recording is genuine. Celeste spends the afternoon in the lab alone, deciding she will leave with her dignity.

Then a text arrives: Come to The Glass Conservatory at Sterling Gardens. Thirty minutes.

What we noticed

  • The readers know the context of that recording (chapter 169: Dominic was protecting Celeste's name). Celeste doesn't. The book gets real tension out of the gap.
  • Felix's arc is the book's darkest warning about obsession, and it ends with the consequence landing on someone innocent.
  • Scarlett's rescue is her best chapter so far: competent, careful and unwilling to cross the last line.

Questions readers ask

When is Celeste's divorce finalised?

Around chapter 327. The court dissolves the marriage on grounds of infidelity and fraudulent misrepresentation, and Celeste receives half of Julian's assets.

Why is Celeste arrested?

Sierra falsely tells the police that Celeste pushed her. The Helix security footage proves it was Felix, and Celeste is released within hours.

What is on Julian's recording?

Dominic's own words from their office confrontation long before: "This is payback… I am not going to stop until I get bored." Taken out of context, it makes Celeste doubt him.
