This Two Can Play recap part 1 covers the opening chapters by Rosa Kane, with spoilers. Mature themes are kept general.
"Your husband is having an affair with my wife"
Celeste has been married to Julian Fisher for two years. To the outside world he's the perfect husband, with flowers every morning, love notes all day and constant video calls when he travels. So when Dominic Ford, the quiet husband of her best friend Seraphine, sits across from her and says Julian is having an affair with Sera, she refuses to believe him.
Dominic doesn't argue. He shows her a photo from a private club taken on a night Julian was supposedly abroad. He also tells her the truth about Julian's upcoming "four-day business trip": Julian has booked the entire East Wing of Rosewood Resort for himself and Sera. That night Julian comes home loving and attentive, then keeps his distance, as he has for three months: "I'm too tired, baby."
The phone call across the garden
The next evening Dominic takes Celeste to the resort. From the trees she watches Julian and Sera laughing together, and she calls her husband. Across the garden, Julian answers. He tells her he's at his desk, drowning in work, missing her. Then he hangs up and kisses Sera as a storm breaks overhead. Celeste stands in the rain until Dominic leads her away.
It is the moment the whole story turns on. It isn't only the affair. It's how easily Julian lies to her face.
"What if we did?"
Dominic takes a suite in the other wing and simply stays with her while she cries. The next morning, over breakfast, Celeste makes a bitter joke: maybe they should cheat on them too. Dominic doesn't laugh. "What if we did?"
Celeste sets the terms herself. It will be a no-strings affair. They will leave enough clues that Julian starts to suspect. The finale will be Julian and Sera catching them in the act, at which point she will ask for a divorce on the spot. "I just want to show him that two can play that game." After that, she and Dominic will go their separate ways.
When Julian calls the next morning, a single unguarded sound from Celeste makes him go cold: "Celeste. Are you with a man?" She lies smoothly and hangs up. The old Celeste would never have managed it.
Dominic's secret
A chapter from Dominic's point of view changes everything. He lost his parents to people who wanted his father's empire, and for years he has lived a deliberately "boring" life to draw his enemies out. He married Seraphine partly as cover. He also reveals that he saw Celeste first, in a bar three years ago, before Sera "called dibs".
The red dress and the gala
A dress arrives at Celeste's door with a note: For my game partner. It is bold, red and nothing like the covered-up clothes Julian has always chosen for her. Dominic invites her as his plus-one to a gala hosted by Veil Holdings, the country's richest company, whose chairman has never been seen in public.
Julian and Sera are there too, arm in arm and openly, sheltering behind Sera's public image as Celeste's "sister". Then the host introduces the chairman of Veil Holdings for the first time: Dominic Ford.
The "office worker" everyone pitied walks on stage in a tie that matches Celeste's dress. He announces a $5 billion grant to Helix Research, the small women's-health lab Celeste co-founded and had almost abandoned during her marriage. Then he calls her name. The spotlight finds Celeste in front of the husband who hasn't yet recognised her.
What we noticed
- The book establishes Julian's hypocrisy early and keeps paying it off. He polices Celeste's clothes while applauding Sera's.
- Helix Research isn't decoration. Celeste's career is the part of her life Julian took from her, and getting it back matters as much as the revenge.
- Dominic's backstory plants a danger that the romance can't ignore for long.
