Greymoor Academy Recap Part 9: The Trial
A six-day fever, a visitor in the dark, a brawl on the steps of the Council's Court and Maisie's plea over the Goddess's flame. Chapters 283–289.

This Greymoor Academy recap part 9 covers chapters 283–289, the newest chapters in our copy. Content note: Maisie goes through her darkest thoughts during the fever, and the trial deals with a lost pregnancy. We mention both carefully and keep the recap non-graphic.
Part 8 ended with the trial two days away and Maisie unconscious from the cost of the rift. These seven chapters get her to the Council's Court, and show just how stacked the room is against her.
The fever (chapters 283–284)
The burnout hits like a winter that won't end. Maisie shivers under blankets while burning up, can't keep food down and drifts in and out for days. The three princes take turns: Soren bribes her into eating with the promise of Corazon's chocolate cake ("Works every time"), Jericho holds her against his chest, and Quinlan sits with her through the worst of it.
At her lowest, she calls herself useless, and the book makes clear she means much more than that. Quinlan's answer is the emotional centre of this arc: they failed her, it was never her fault, and the three of them will be her brace, her blade, even her punching bag, for however long it takes her to breathe again. She finally breaks down in his arms.
Then, on a night after the fever breaks, a tear falls on her cheek. Someone kisses her forehead, smelling of alcohol, and whispers that he's sorry. Mercer. By the time she opens her eyes, the room is empty. Only his scent and the salt on her lips prove he was there.
She has slept six days. The hearing is in two hours. Corazon, the maid who helped the Queen take her, wakes her up with a confession: she has a son, it was his life or Maisie's, and the Prince got him out. She wants to earn back Maisie's trust.
Before the Court (chapters 285–286)
Soren has a plan: a plain white dress for innocence, her hair cut into a neat bob and her scars outlined in silver so the whole hall can see them. Maisie is less worried about the dress than about what the three have learned from the hospital. She may never be able to give them children, and she wonders if that will change how they see her.
Their behaviour suggests not. Her Lycan has marked all three, and they're fighting over who gets to make her breakfast. Her lawyer, Alden, is honest: they can't clear her name today. The goal is to make the Councils see her as more than a monster, walk out free and buy time for evidence.
On the steps, Tessa is waiting among the reporters. In front of every camera she asks about the pregnancy Maisie lost, a charge under Lycan law, and promises to leave her own marks on Maisie's mates. Jericho lunges, Soren holds him back, and Maisie's rage spills through the bond until Quinlan goes for Tessa himself. By the time the trial starts, half the Council's guards are hurt. And when Maisie asks where Mercer is, the answer is chilling: they can't find him.
Not guilty (chapters 287–289)
The Court is an arena. Wolves sit on one side, the Queen's Council on the other, Lycans above and wolf elites below, Maisie's twin among them wearing a stolen heirloom. Councilman Derek Moore reads the charges: the Night Shade bombing and its fifty-nine victims, read out by name, conspiracy with rogues, attempted treason, Lyon Park's death, attacking Tessa, and ending a Lycan pregnancy. The hall erupts.
Maisie holds her hand over the Goddess's flame and says it anyway: "Not guilty."
The prosecutor, Sofia Zaytsev, then builds a pattern. Luna Kaida cries through a story about the orphan she "treated like a daughter" until Regina stands up and shouts her down. Lana, empty-eyed and hiding a cut on her wrist, repeats the threat Maisie made when she hurt her at school. Tessa tells a half-true story about a fire. A former maid says Maisie punched Soren into a wall, which Soren cheerfully calls her love language. A student repeats Maisie's own threat about a cliff trail, word for word.
Then the Crown calls Regina. She calls Maisie her best friend and says there isn't a murderous bone in her body. She even teases Zaytsev about her crush on Professor Ivanov. But Zaytsev turns Regina's own words into proof that Maisie keeps running off with Lyon, and that Lyon always got hurt. The chapter ends with the case against Maisie stronger than ever.
What we noticed
- The rogue Quinlan forced to testify hasn't been called yet. He is Maisie's best card, and the defence is clearly saving him.
- Lana's empty eyes and the cut on her wrist look like more than guilt. Someone may be controlling her testimony.
- The voice in Maisie's nightmares, a baby asking her to "come find me, keeper", is new and unexplained.
- Mercer was there, and then he wasn't. Without him the bond can't be completed, and Tessa knows it.

Questions readers ask
Does Maisie plead guilty?
No. In chapter 287 she holds her hand over the Goddess's flame, where every witness swears to tell the truth, and pleads not guilty to every charge.
Where is Mercer during the trial?
Nobody knows. He was held in the castle dungeons, then released, and the others can't find him. He visits Maisie once while she sleeps in chapter 284 and leaves before she wakes.
Who testifies against Maisie?
Luna Kaida Hayes, her twin Lana, Tessa Graham, a former maid and a student all testify for the Crown. Regina is called too, but she defends Maisie.
