Two Can Play Details You Missed in Chapters 101–200

A grandmother's vase, a door hatch that mirrors the rain, Elizabeth's secret and a car only three people own. Small details from Two Can Play chapters 101–200 that set up big moments.

Two Can Play details you missed in chapters 101–200, with spoilers up to chapter 200.

1. The vase was a gift from Julian's grandmother

When Julian throws the vase at Celeste, she asks: "Did you not say that vase was a gift from your late grandmother?" Julian destroys the one family heirloom the book mentions, in the same chapter arc where Dominic's grandmother walks back into his life. Two grandmothers, two very different families.

2. The door hatch mirrors the garden

In chapter 2 Celeste watched Julian through the rain while he lied to her on the phone, and he had no idea. In the finale Julian watches Celeste through a square hatch, and she looks right back. Same scene, reversed, and this time the one watching is the one who knows everything.

3. "What is your excuse, Mrs. Elizabeth Fisher?"

When Elizabeth argues that a cheating husband means something was lacking in his wife, Celeste turns it around and asks for her excuse. Elizabeth loses colour, and Julian asks, "Celeste, what are you talking about?" The book doesn't answer, but Celeste clearly knows something. Also note that Julian's father is mentioned as seriously ill.

4. Kingsley knew the car

Kingsley recognises the car Dominic used to pick Celeste up: only three exist in the world, and the other two owners live abroad. It's why he believes Seraphine's accusations at first, and a sign that Dominic's attempts at discretion have limits once he stops pretending to be ordinary.

5. The right thumb

At the white mansion, Celeste's left thumb doesn't open the door. Her right thumb does. It's a small, funny moment, but it confirms that Dominic registered her fingerprint deliberately, before she had said anything about her feelings. He was planning for her to come home before she was.

6. The towel was a plan

From Celeste's point of view, Dominic walking out of the shower in a towel just as she starts her break-up speech is terrible luck. From Dominic's point of view (chapter 188), it was the plan: "show her instead of telling her". Reading the two chapters together is one of the book's best uses of alternating viewpoints.

7. Pat confirms the bar

Dominic's confession says he noticed Celeste at a bar "almost two years ago" (chapter 5 said almost three), before Seraphine "swooped in". About fifty chapters earlier, Pat independently remembers the same night: "You clearly showed interest in him first but Seraphine swooped in and stole him away like she always did." Two sources, and one timeline that makes the romance older than the revenge.

8. Felix's fiancée heard everything

When Seraphine answers Felix's phone and leaves the line open, it looks like cruelty for its own sake. At chapter 200 it pays off: Sierra calls Celeste in tears to say Felix is cheating. Seraphine meant the call to split Felix from his fiancée. Instead she has given Celeste a witness.

What these details set up

"What is your excuse, Mrs. Elizabeth Fisher?" gets its answer in chapter 208: Julian and Riley are not Mr. Fisher's children. Celeste uses it at the worst possible moment for Elizabeth, in front of her own daughter.

Sierra's phone call starts the next arc. She is pregnant, and her story is what finally makes Celeste cut Felix off. It also sets up the saddest storyline of chapters 301–400.

The right thumb becomes the key to one of Celeste's best scenes. In chapter 219 her fingerprint opens Dominic's door when he calls her for help, and this time she's the one breaking down a door to save him.

Our favourite is the towel. Two chapters, two points of view, one scene that means something different in each. It's the book at its most playful, and a reminder that Dominic plans for Celeste even when he's being ridiculous.

Questions readers ask

What is Elizabeth Fisher's secret?

It hasn't been revealed by chapter 200. Celeste asks "What is your excuse, Mrs. Elizabeth Fisher?" and Elizabeth goes pale, which suggests an affair or betrayal of her own.

Why did Dominic hide his grandmother?

He kept her in another city with another family for years so his enemies could not use her against him. She returns once his identity is public and the threat seems neutralised.
