Two Can Play Recap Part 17: The Contract Wedding

Sparrow tears down Big Bryan's operation and frees seventy-two girls, then forgets his own bride the moment he sees the maid of honour. Tasha's contract wedding, recapped.

This Two Can Play recap part 17 covers chapters 401–412 and 429–435, with spoilers. The book has many mature scenes in this stretch; we skip them entirely.

"I brought you here to sleep"

Sparrow's grandmother has just thrown an ugly insult at Scarlett and her friends, and Sparrow tells her, flatly, that judging people before you know them is "distasteful and low". Back at his fortress he turns down Jasmine and sends for Scarlett instead: he just wants her beside him while he sleeps. It doesn't stay that simple.

The part the book lingers on is what comes after. For the first time in his life, Sparrow dries a woman's hair and lets her dry his. "I did not hate any of it."

The next morning he finds her laughing in his kitchen with Madam Lily and snaps that her place is "at my bed, not my kitchen". Then Tasha calls her name from the stairs, and Scarlett's whole face changes. Sparrow quietly scraps his plan to use Tasha as bait to draw Bryan out.

Seventy-two

The doctor brings the Hemovax antidote, and Maya, Jasmine and Tasha cry like they've been told they'll live forever. Scarlett is the only one who doesn't cry.

Then Sparrow flies to Big Bryan's city with twenty handpicked men. The compound falls in one night. Bryan escapes, wounded, through a drainage grate. Inside, Sparrow finds seventy-two girls, none of them older than twenty-five, and injects every one of them with the antidote himself. Only then does he explain what the "monthly check-ups" really were. He splits Bryan's cash between them and gives them one line of advice: "Learn to be strong… You are free to go."

He puts a billion-dollar bounty on Bryan's head. When he tells Scarlett, she throws her arms around him. "Thank you. Thank you."

Deep green

Sparrow spends the night before the wedding trying to prove to himself that Scarlett is replaceable. It doesn't work.

At the venue, the bride steps out of the car in white silk, and behind her stands the maid of honour in a dress "the colour of deep green water". Sparrow walks straight toward Scarlett, forgetting the bride entirely, until a hundred camera shutters bring him back. He steps back in front of Tasha, and a thought lands: "Am I making a mistake?"

"I do"

From Scarlett's side, the ceremony is a mother watching her child get married. She wears green because it's Tasha's favourite colour, and her sister Lynette's locket at her throat. Sparrow's grandmother glares at Scarlett and melts for Tasha. The guest list is mayors, magnates and heiresses, and Scarlett understands what Sparrow is doing: building a wall of names around Tasha so high that no one will dare come for her.

"I do." A quick kiss. Then, at the reception, Sparrow refuses the first dance and leaves Tasha standing alone on the floor. Scarlett, Maya and Jasmine run out and dance with her instead.

Goodbyes

Jasmine and Maya leave that night. In the car, Scarlett tells them to check their phones: five million dollars in Bitcoin, each, taken from Julian. "You earned it in hell." The rest is Tasha's future. "One year," Jasmine makes her swear. "Then we come for you both."

Sparrow drives the new family to a quiet white house with no guards, his real home, and the next morning Tasha snaps at Scarlett for trying to take over breakfast: "I am Sparrow's wife… You are not my mother!"

What we noticed

  • The raid is Sparrow's most heroic act in the book, and he calls the girls' gratitude "irritating". The book keeps his kindness and his coldness in the same frame.
  • The wedding is staged so the cameras catch Sparrow looking at the wrong woman. It's a small moment that the next arc depends on.
  • Tasha's outburst reads like stress on the first read. It's the first sign of something much bigger.

Questions readers ask

Does Sparrow marry Tasha?

Yes, around chapter 432, in a huge public ceremony. It's a one-year contract marriage designed to put Tasha under his name and protection.

What happens to Big Bryan?

Sparrow's team destroys his base around chapter 409. Bryan escapes wounded, and Sparrow puts a one-billion bounty on his head.

Are the girls cured of Hemovax?

Yes. A doctor gives Scarlett, Tasha, Maya and Jasmine the antidote, and Sparrow personally injects seventy-two more girls he frees from Bryan's compound.
