Queen Lysandra in Greymoor Academy: The False Queen

The Lycan Queen rules with a crown that calls her a liar. What Lysandra did to her sister, why she fears Maisie, and what she wants now.

This Queen Lysandra in Greymoor Academy analysis covers chapters 1–273 with spoilers. Her story includes dark events we describe only in outline.

For most of Greymoor Academy, Queen Lysandra is a presence rather than a person: a red-haired ruler with shifting eyes and six bite marks who punishes from a gallery. Then, in chapter 163, the book follows her into a ruined temple, and she becomes the most important villain in the story.

The crown that calls her a liar

The Lycan crown carries a ruby called the Goddess's Eye. It is sentient; it resizes to fit whoever the Goddess chooses. When Lysandra bleeds on it in chapter 163, the voices in the ruby call her a false queen who turned on her own kin. They whisper that a queen in hiding is coming for her place, and that her end will come at the hands of a brown-haired hunter.

Below the temple, chained in the dark, is what is left of her sister, Soren's mother, the true Queen. Lysandra's jealousy turned her into something undead, and it begs to see its son. Its prophecy is precise: as long as the girl lives, Lysandra will die on the night of Samhain. It also tells her how to cut one life out of a bond.

Her war on Maisie

From that chapter on, every move the Queen makes against Maisie reads differently:

  • The fertility tonics that silence Maisie's Lycan and block her healing (chapters 177–188).
  • The Hunt where Maisie becomes the prey (chapter 150).
  • Tessa's recruitment, the attack on Samhain, the forged letter and the frame for Lyon's death.
  • The missing Munich doctor, who refused her money and paid for it (chapter 271).

Her official story, told to the court in chapter 143, is that Maisie's father ended her sister for Margaret Hunt. Ryder Hunt tells Maisie in chapter 166 that there is always another side to the story. The ruby, and the thing in the dungeon, suggest the Hunts were blamed for a crime that was Lysandra's own.

The mother and the aunt

Lysandra raised Soren after his mother was gone, and she kept Jericho as her enforcer after rescuing him at thirteen. She never acknowledged Mercer, her own son. In chapter 271 she tells Mercer she loves him for the first time, and it is true. In the same breath she lies to him, and he knows. It is the most human she has ever been, and it costs her the son she finally claimed.

Afraid, not evil?

The book tries to complicate her. In chapter 218 she tells the thing in the dungeon about the son she raised, and we see grief underneath the cruelty. The demon tells her she has convinced herself it is all for the greater good, when she only wants to live. We think the demon is right. Lysandra's defining trait is fear: of the prophecy, of the Hunts, and above all of a girl the crown might prefer.

Where she stands at chapter 273

By the end of our coverage, the Queen has lost almost everything. Maisie pulled the crown off her head in front of the whole academy, and the ruby no longer answers Lysandra. Her son has turned on her. And she is expecting a child, which is the only reason Maisie did not let the arrow fly in chapter 259.

Our read

Lysandra is the book's best villain because she is the mirror of what Maisie could become: a woman who took power to stop being afraid and never stopped being afraid. The prophecy says the brown-haired hunter will end her. We are not sure Maisie will be the one to do it, and we lay out the possibilities in our predictions after chapter 273.

Questions readers ask

What did Queen Lysandra do to her sister?

Out of jealousy she turned her sister, the true Queen and Soren's mother, into an undead creature and kept her chained beneath the castle (chapter 163). She later confesses more of it in chapter 218.

Why does the Queen fear Maisie?

A prophecy says that as long as "the girl" lives, the Queen will die at the hands of a brown-haired hunter. Maisie is a Hunt with brown hair.

Is the Queen pregnant?

Yes. Maisie notices it in chapter 259 and cannot bring herself to let the arrow fly.
