Scarlett in Two Can Play: The Promise Behind Everything

Hacker, fighter, con artist, aunt. Chapters 569–579 finally explain Scarlett Vance: a sister's sacrifice, a deathbed promise, and a woman who believes she doesn't deserve to be loved.

Scarlett in Two Can Play, analysed with spoilers up to chapter 582. Mature parts of her past are mentioned only in general terms.

The woman in the red hair

Scarlett Vance enters Two Can Play as a problem for Julian: the redhead in the VIP room with a hidden camera and a hundred-million-dollar price. For two hundred chapters after that she's the most capable person in any room. She's a hacker who traces cars across the city's traffic cameras and a fighter who takes down six guards without a sound. She's also a con artist who used Julian to reach Sparrow.

What the book held back was the reason. Chapters 569–570 finally give it.

Lynette

Scarlett was raised by her older sister, Lynette, whose own baby, Tasha, had been stolen by the child's father. When seven-year-old Scarlett needed heart surgery for a defect in her aorta, Lynette sold every share of the company she had built and paid for the best surgeons she could find. Then she cleaned offices for five years to cover the check-ups.

When Lynette fell ill, she started training Scarlett to take over the search. Karate, an early degree, and computers until Scarlett could get into almost anything. On her deathbed Lynette was still whispering Tasha's name, and Scarlett made the promise that runs the rest of her life: find her, protect her, give her a good life.

Why she'll kneel

That promise explains her most frustrating scenes. Scarlett hands Tasha the contract marriage. She takes the blame for Tasha's mistakes and lies to Sparrow to protect her. At the pool she kneels because Tasha asks her to prove her love.

It also explains her strength. She tells Sparrow she has always had lines she wouldn't cross, "things like taking a human life". Where Tasha is concerned, those lines disappear. She says it to his face, calmly.

"Trash"

The other half of Scarlett is her shame. After Lynette died, a man she trusted treated her as a joke among his friends and told her she was trash. Years of doing whatever the search required made her believe him. When Sparrow says he loves her, her first answer is that she can't afford it. Her second is that she isn't the kind of woman anyone should love.

His reply is the line that defines her arc: "You are not trash, Scarlett. You are my treasure."

What makes her work

  • She's competent, not invincible. She hides the ability to swim for years to seem weaker than she is, and then she collapses from dangerously high blood pressure. The book keeps her strength and her fragility side by side.
  • Her loyalty has a cost the book acknowledges. Sparrow asks whether her devotion to Tasha is "unhealthy", and the story doesn't dismiss the question.
  • She mirrors Celeste. Both women survived men who treated them as property. Celeste learned to take her life back. Scarlett is only now learning that she's allowed a life at all.

The lie she tells for Tasha

Even after the pool, Scarlett protects her niece. When Sparrow asks what happened with Celeste, she calls it "a misunderstanding" and claims Tasha is sorry. When he sees the footage of her kneeling, she invents a story about an act they staged for Tasha's friends. It's loyalty, and it's also the habit of a lifetime: carry the weight so nobody else has to.

What to watch

The heart surgery she had as a child and her collapse in chapter 580 look like a thread the book plans to pull. So does the promise Sparrow made: once Dominic's wedding is over, he'll hunt Big Bryan and end the contract. If he keeps it, Scarlett's obligation to Lynette may finally be complete, and the book will have to show what she wants for herself.
