What happened in room 20, is Lucia working for someone, and will Julian come back for the wedding? Six theories for the next chapters of Two Can Play, built only on clues from the text.

These Two Can Play predictions are our own guesses for the chapters after 582, not leaks or spoilers. Every case is built on clues from the text, with chapter numbers, and we'll mark each one right or wrong as the story continues.

Two Can Play stops at chapter 582 with Scarlett in hospital, Tasha hiding her neck, and a wedding two weeks away. Here are the six questions we can't stop thinking about, the clues behind each, and how likely we think they are.

Case 1: What happened in room 20?

The clues. Lucia chooses the club, the wig and the timing (chapter 548). A stranger calling himself "Trey" hands Tasha the key to room 20, and the man waiting there is Big Bryan (chapters 549–550). In chapter 582 Tasha arrives in a turtleneck, which Scarlett notes she never wears, crying that Lucia is "a terrible person".

Our theory. Bryan let Tasha go on purpose, with a message for Sparrow and a mark that proves he can reach her any time. Tasha may have been told to keep quiet, which would explain why she can't answer Scarlett.

Likelihood: 70%. What would prove it wrong: Tasha escaping on her own, or Bryan keeping her.

Case 2: Who is Lucia really working for?

The clues. Granny introduces Lucia as the great-granddaughter of her late best friend (chapter 532). Lucia pushes every step that isolates Tasha from Scarlett: the tests, the pool, the club. She claims she didn't recognise Celeste, the most-photographed bride in the city (chapter 545).

Our theory. Lucia works for Big Bryan, and Granny is being used without knowing it. The "friendship" follows the same script Cara used on Seraphine: flattery, a secret, a test and a trap.

Likelihood: 80%. What would prove it wrong: Lucia turning out to be just a cruel socialite with no link to Bryan.

Case 3: Is Scarlett pregnant?

The clues. Scarlett has avoided pregnancy for years with "every precaution" (chapter 429), and Tasha says Scarlett believes she can never have children (chapter 447). Sparrow skips a routine appointment he hasn't missed in five years because Scarlett told him she was protected (chapter 525). Then Scarlett collapses with dangerously high blood pressure (chapter 580).

Our theory. A surprise pregnancy, with the blood pressure as the first warning sign, would fit the details the book keeps planting. It would also test Sparrow's "no children" speech to his grandmother (chapter 558).

Likelihood: 55%. What would prove it wrong: the doctor finding another cause, such as stress or her old heart condition.

Case 4: Does Seraphine escape the island?

The clues. Cara tells Seraphine she's the only one who can get her off the island (chapter 521). Seraphine has just watched Dominic's proposal and sworn to get him back.

Our theory. Cara's offer is another test from Emerson, and Seraphine fails it. If she does escape, her first target will be the wedding.

Likelihood: 50% that she escapes; 35% that she reaches the wedding. What would prove it wrong: Cara helping her honestly and Seraphine choosing to disappear.

Case 5: Will Julian come back for the wedding?

The clues. Julian's last scene is his vow outside the garden: "if I cannot have you, no one else can" (chapter 374). He hasn't appeared in his own chapter for more than two hundred chapters, and the book rarely forgets a threat like that.

Our theory. Julian returns in the run-up to the wedding, possibly with help from someone else who hates Celeste.

Likelihood: 65%. What would prove it wrong: a wedding with no sign of him.

Case 6: When does Kingsley learn about the baby?

The clues. Kingsley still believes Pat ended the pregnancy (chapter 413). They're dating and dancing at the engagement party (chapter 562), and a pregnancy can't stay hidden for long. Sharon hasn't been mentioned since her father's family was sentenced (chapter 503).

Our theory. The truth comes out before Dominic's wedding, and Pat tells him herself rather than letting someone else do it.

Likelihood: 75%. What would prove it wrong: Sharon or another character revealing it first.

Questions readers ask

Are these confirmed spoilers?

No. They are our own theories, based only on clues in chapters 1–582. We'll mark each one confirmed or wrong as new chapters come out.

Which theory is most likely?

We think Lucia working against Tasha is the safest bet, followed by Pat's secret coming out before the wedding.

When will the theories be updated?

Whenever new chapters are published. Each case will be marked CONFIRMED, WRONG or STILL OPEN, with the chapter number.
