Two Can Play details you missed in chapters 401–500, with spoilers up to chapter 500.
1. The green dress
Scarlett wears green to the wedding "because green was Tasha's favourite colour". It's a gift to Tasha, and it's what makes Sparrow walk past the bride. The same dress is torn that night, and it's what Tasha sees on the floor from the stairs.
2. Lynette's locket
Scarlett now wears openly the locket she hid for years. Inside is her sister Lynette, Tasha's mother. Scarlett talks to it during the ceremony ("You would be so proud of Tasha") and remembers Lynette's deathbed when Tasha slaps her. Every sacrifice goes back to that promise.
3. Xander Corporation
Sparrow's hidden company is called Xander, as in Alexander Ford. Scarlett "dug through every shell and slush fund" and never found it, which tells you how carefully he's kept his legitimate life apart from Sparrow.
4. "I prefer to do business with men"
At Xander, Sparrow tells Scarlett he keeps women out of his work so he'll never be tempted. That same afternoon he brings her to a high-stakes deal in the middle of nowhere. His partners notice the exception immediately, and so does the reader.
5. The identical outfit
After Mirele, Scarlett buys a copy of the jeans and blue shirt she left in, so Tasha won't know anything happened. Sparrow calls it paranoia. It works on Tasha, who notices nothing. It's also the first time in the book Scarlett hides something from her.
6. "The woman you love"
The three men at Mirele say the phrase first, not Sparrow. He laughs it off, then runs out of the building. The line keeps replaying in his head in the shower, and it's clearly where "What are you doing to me?" (chapter 480) comes from.
7. Emerson never left
Emerson tells Seraphine he'll be away "a week". She meets him in the club a couple of days later. Look at who is behind him: Cara, who led her there, talking to Blaze, who sold her the pills. Our theory is that the whole thing was a test of the contract, and she failed it.
8. A birthday four months away
Tasha covers her lie with a "surprise" for Scarlett's birthday, "about four months away". Scarlett says she can't remember the last time she celebrated it. Books this long rarely let a date like that go to waste.
What these details set up
Most of these details point to the next hundred chapters. The green dress and the identical outfit show Scarlett hiding things from Tasha for the first time, just as Tasha starts hiding things from her. The locket is a reminder of why Scarlett will forgive almost anything: every choice she makes goes back to a promise at Lynette's bedside.
Xander Corporation suggests Sparrow has a life beyond the clubs that the book hasn't opened yet. And Cara and Blaze standing behind Emerson is the strongest hint that Seraphine's disaster on the island was arranged.
Our favourite is the identical outfit. Scarlett has just escaped five men and been dragged down a hillside, and her first thought is that Tasha mustn't worry. She walks into a boutique and buys the same jeans and the same blue shirt so nothing looks different when she gets home. It's funny, it's sad, and it sums up her whole life in one errand: she hides her own pain so the person she loves can stay happy.
Finally, the birthday four months away gives Tasha's lie a deadline. If you're keeping a list of threads to watch after chapter 500, start there, and with the Castro case Celeste has taken to court. For the full story, start with Recap Part 17.
